Silybum marianum

Silybum marianum is a Milk thistle, is an annual or biannual plant of the Asteraceae family. This fairly typical thistle has red to purple flowers and shiny pale green leaves with white veins.

Active Principle:

Silybum marianum seed extract contains silymarin (a flavonolignane complex consisting of silibinin A and B/silybin/silymarin I, isosilibinin A and B, silicristin/silymarin II, silidianin).

Clinical Uses:

It is a hepatoprotectant

  • It increases the livers’ ability to detoxify numerous toxic substances, including pesticides and heavy metals.
  • Acts as an antioxidant to protect liver cells from free radical damage.
  •  It also facilitates the regeneration of healthy liver cells and boosts the organ's ability to filter toxins from the blood.

Used in the treatment of Viral Hepatitis

  • Increases the intracellular levels of glutathione and superoxide dismutase, inhibiting the formation of leukotrienes, and stimulating hepatocyte regeneration.
  • It blocks HCV (Hepatitis C Virus) cell culture infection by ceasing HCV RNA replication.

It is a Demulcent

  • Soothes and moistens. For both kidney and bladder irritations, as well as mucous membranes and inflammations of the skin and integumentary system.

Available as Plant Extract containing upto 80% Silymarin.
