Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)

Licorice

Commonly known as Licorice, which grows wild in South eastern Europe and South western Asia. A woody-stemmed perennial growing to 2 meters with dark leaves and cream to mauve flowers. The active constituent, glycyrrhizinic acid is extracted from the roots.

Active Principle:

The extract contains triterpenoid saponin glycyrrhizin, which is a mixture of potassium and calcium salts of glycyrrhizinic acid.

Clinical Uses:

  • Anti-infective
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Expectorant
  • Demulcent
  • Mild laxative

Advantages:

  • Research in Japan in 1985 showed that glycyrrhizin was effective in the treatment of chronic hepatitis.
  • Licorice as a whole reduces stomach secretions but produces a thick protective  mucous for the lining of the stomach, making it a useful remedy in inflammatory stomach conditions.
  • The isoflavones are known to be oestrogenic.
