Griffonia simplicifolia (5-HTP)

Griffonia simplicifolia

Griffonia simplicifolia is a woody climbing shrub native to West Africa and Central Africa. It grows to about 3 m, and bears greenish flowers followed by black pods.

Active Principle:

The seeds of the plant are used as a herbal supplement for their 5-Hydroxytryptophan content also known as 5-HTP.

5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), also known as oxitriptan (INN), is a naturally-occurring amino acid and chemical precursor as well as metabolic intermediate in the biosynthesis of the neurotransmitters serotonin and melatonin from tryptophan.

Griffonia simplicifolia 5-Hydroxytryptophan is decarboxylated to serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT) by the enzyme aromatic-L-amino-acid decarboxylase with the help of Vitamin B6.

This reaction occurs both in nervous tissue and in the liver.5-HTP crosses the blood-brain barrier, while 5-HT does not. Excess 5-HTP, especially when administered with Vitamin B6, is thought to be metabolized and excreted.

Pharmacology

The psychoactive action of 5-HTP is derived from its effect on the production of serotonin in central nervous system tissue. More specifically, 5-HTP increases the production of serotonin. Thus, it has been used to treat diseases, e.g. depression, for which the lack of serotonin is thought to be a contributing factor.

Clinical Uses:

  • 5- HTP provides the quickest, most effective, and most consistent overall results in treating insomnia.
  • 5-HTP improves the quality of sleep and is also useful in the treatment of sleep disorders other than insomnia.
  • 5-HTP makes sleep more restful and rejuvenating.
