Amla (Emblica officinalis)

The Indian gooseberry or Amla (Phyllanthus emblica, syn. Emblica officinalis) is a deciduous tree of the Euphorbiaceae family. It is known for its edible fruit of the same name. The fruit is nearly spherical, light greenish yellow, quite smooth and hard on appearance, with 6 vertical stripes or furrows.

Active Principle:

Amla is rich in natural vitamin C. The other crucial chemicals are polyphenols (tannins), gallic acid and Ellagic Acid (linked together to form other tannins), and rutin. The Key active constituents are Emblicanin A&B, Puniglucanin, Pedunculagin, 2-keto-gluconolactone (Vitamin-C equivalents). Ellagic acid, Hexahydroxy-diphenic acid and conjugates.

Clinical Uses:

  •  It has cooling, diuretic and antibacterial properties
  •  Due to high Vitamin C content Amla has anti oxidative properties therefore prevents premature aging.
  •  Amla strengthens immune system.
  •  Amla has cell rejuvenating properties and therefore used in maintaining good health of skin and hair
  •  Amla helps to keep the hair glossy and shining. Therefore it used in many hair care products.
