Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is a species of succulent plant that grows in arid climates and is widely distributed in India and other arid areas. Aloe vera is a stem less or very short-stemmed succulent plant growing to 60–100 cm (24–39 in) tall, spreading by offsets. The leaves are thick and fleshy, green to grey-green, with some varieties showing white flecks on the upper and lower stem surfaces. The margin of the leaf is serrated and has small white teeth.

Active Principle:

Aloe vera leaves contain a range of biologically active compounds, the best studied being acetylated mannans, polymannans, anthraquinone C-glycosides, anthrones and anthraquinones and various lectins. The sap or latex contains a bitter anthraquinone called Aloin (mixture of barbaloin and isobarbaloin) and the gel contains polysaccharides.

Clinical Uses:

  • Cosmetics: Used in skin and hair care products. Aloe vera extracts have antibacterial and antifungal activities.
  • Skin care: Application of aloe can drastically reduce the time it takes for burns (including sunburn) to heal.
  • Wound healing: Most of the aloe gel contains polyethylene oxide which is very much effective in healing the wounds and fast healing for pregnant women having gynecological surgery.
